Borges and Darderi have met three times, and Borges has won all three. That record is why the market makes him a clear favourite in Montreal, and it is also why the games line looks a set behind the evidence.
A hard court that suits one and strips the other
Borges has been efficient in this event, two untroubled wins by 6-4 6-2, striking flat and early and refusing to be dragged into long exchanges. On this surface Darderi's forehand behind the serve loses much of its weight.
The Italian arrived in North America with clay confidence and little else. He has acknowledged the conditioning gap after surgery, played dense weeks in Estoril and Bastad, withdrew in Los Cabos, and here has had one walkover plus a recovery from a set down against Shang. He rarely loses quietly.
Where the extra games come from
Both summer meetings finished on exactly 23 games, each with a tiebreak and a late break, each decided by two or three points. Nothing tactical remains hidden between them, which leaves service games and endings.
The finishing detail matters more than the ranking gap. Borges served for a set against Sinner and did not convert, and he held set points in the Bastad tiebreak without taking them. An opponent who keeps climbing back, against a favourite who hesitates to close, produces either a third set or a tiebreak, and both clear the number.
